Install vRealize Operations Manager 6

VMware vRealize Operations Manager is the rebranded name of vCenter Operations Manager starting from version 6.0

The name change is not the only one introduced in this product: there are big improvement that make  this new version very interesting. There are many changes in both appearance and in the install and configuration procedure that is easier compared with the previous version.

The product architecture is completelly changed and the Analytics and UI VMs converged into a single VM making VROPs deployment and administration easier.

The new vROps has a scale out architecture and a RAIN like architecture that bring more resiliency in the application layer. Adding more nodes to a cluster we increase both performance and availability.

Beside the virtual appliance deployment there’s also a Windows version of the application but, in my opinion, this is not a feasible option. With the VA we can avoid wasting windows licenses and we will have an easier and faster deployment of the solution.

Each step of the install is well described in the installation guide. The entire setup has been improved and made easy: connecting to the node IP address, an intuitive and fast wizard start up. There are three deployment options:

  • express installation (oriented for single node environments)
  • new installation (like express but more customizable and with cluster option)
  • expand existing installation (used to add new node to an existing install)

In this post I’ll follow the option  New installation.

Clicking on New Installation the installation Wizard will start. All the required steps are clearly showed. This screen will be shown throughout your installation, showing each “icon” as completed as you compete them. We are now at the Initial Setup stage under Administration.

In the next screen you have to select a name for the master node. Nella schermata successiva dovrete scegliere un nome per il nodo master. This is my first node, which is also the master node. Setup an external NTP source for master node. All other nodes will sync time from Master node.

Click on Next and complete the wizard. At the end of the procedure the following screen will show up. In this page, all the cluster node, with their state, are displayed

In the next post we will add another node to the cluster and we will configure our vCenter.
